  • OPNewsletter Dec’09 +13.2%; Jan’10 +3.7% (Open)

Another excellent month for OPNewsletter delivering almost double of monthly aim (5-7%).  OPNewsletter returned 13.2% in Dec 2009 thus completing a full year without any monthly loss in 2009. Jan 2010 portfolios are already up +3.7% and we have invested 78% of portfolio capital across 4 different income portfolios.

OPNewsletter has been consistently outperforming broader markets. Pls read customer reviews; If you would like to sign-up for OPNewsletter directly, pls click here to sign-up for the wait-list (subscription is by invitation only).

For the benefit of other OP redears, I shall restate what I shared with OPN members earlier.

For all the portfolios we are short delta. And pls note this is an intended directional strategy for a short period . I have chosen to be short delta as I am sensing a sudden move in near future; My guess is a downside move but it may happen on upside as well. If it is towards upside, I am ok to give away a few % from the portfolio gains but if this is a downside move, we shall reap larger gains both due “short delta” and “rise in IV“. This is a short term strategy, though. If that doesn’t happen anytime soon, we’ll adjust the portfolios to make it more delta neutral.

Markets are not heading for another 50%+ run-ups from here. Most of the good news has already been factored and the economy now has to deliver.

Could US default on it’s debt?

  • Few More Words from OPN Subscribers

From time to time, I keep reviewing if OPNewsletter has been adding value to OPN subscribers. Making money is one thing, helping others make money is all together a different story. I am pleased to share that OPNewsletter continues to deliver its promise and at the same time our learning database continues to grow day after day.

Here are a few latest testimonials from relatively new OPN members-

I have only been with OPN for a few months but I will try and summarize my experiences.

The start for me was very turbulent. I can barely broke even on OP’s portfolio’s (even though all of them made money each month) and actively considered not renewing the service after first 3 months. I understood the basic concepts of calendar Spreads, Iron Condors , Double Diagonals etc. but really did not clearly understand the way ones needs to trade and get good fills. This took some real money and patience to understand how the market behaves. I am still learning this, but working with OP help’s and guidance I have made huge strides and profits. The key to this is how he adjust the trades based on the market direction.

The reason I would recommend this is that OP does not use any assumed fill to manage his returns. They are real, based on fills his subscribers get. I cannot name another service which does the same. The returns he posts, are clear and have a complete audit trail. When there are multiple fills at different prices, he is fair to take the ones at the middle.

The use of the online Forum to post his thoughts and clear insight into the risk and plans of the trade make it very simple and easy to follow him.

This is not a service for a hyper active trader or someone who can only look at their portfolio once a week. However if you are willing to invest about 1 hour each day, it can be a very profitable route. OP’s strategies are based on sound fundamentals and prudent risk analysis with great portfolio management.

Thanks Mufazzal. I hope to continue to add value to your learnings as well as portfolios.

Here are some more encouraging words from another subscriber who wanted to keep his name private.

Overall, I have nothing but good things to say out the service.

    • How is your experience with OPN?- I’ve been a subscriber for several months and am very pleased with the OPN service.
    • How is it different from other Newsletter services? – Compared to other newsletters, I believe that OPN outperforms other services. OP is always available to respond to any questions, comments and concerns. OP has also taken subscribers’ comments into consideration when putting out recommendations and analyses.
    • How is OPN keeping up with its promise?- Yes, OPN is keeping up with its promises.
    • If you were to recommend OPN to your friends, what will you say?- It’s a great service, well worth the price.

I would prefer to keep my name private, however, you can use my city – Los Angeles – and investment experience – 10+ years.

    Thanks.

Thank you for your encouraging words.

  • OPNewsletter (Dec’09) Up +10.7% (Open)

OPN December 2009 portfolio is up +10.7% (still open). We invested 73.9%  of capital per portfolio spread and all the mini-portfolios are making money. The Iron condor sub-portfolio is closed for +14.14% gains. December portfolio’s weekly update is now available at the OP Discussion forum (Member’s only section). To access the Subscriber’s Page of the forum, sign on with your own username and password by clicking here.  We have already started opening income portfolio for Jan 2010 and will complete full portfolio in the coming weeks.

OPNewsletter has consistently outperformed the broader market. Pls read customer reviews or If you would like to sign-up for OPNewsletter directly, pls click here to sign-up for the wait-list (as the subscription is by invitation only).

An important shift seems to be taking place amongst market participants’ minds i.e. “less bad is good” seems to be changing into “just good is not good enough”. If you are looking for playing an income option trading strategy for downward move while still protecting limited upside, try a put diagonal that benefits more from the downward move.  Albeit, do note that markets are now entering into typical bullish period of the year (Dec-Jan). This whole rise from March bottoms had been full of contrariness, are we about to see any other contrary period?

Are you enticed by “teasers” from newsletter service providers to make loads of money in the stock and options market? I encourage you to check out “stockgumshoe” where Travis does an excellent job of decoding the “next million dollar” making opportunity. Then there is fascinating Dr Brett of TraderFeed, always someting interesting to read and widen knowledge horizons. I suggest you to read the first post in a series that he is directing toward developing traders. He plans to write about topics that “no one told me about when I was learning the ropes”. Check it out.

  • OPNewsletter Nov’09 +6% (Open)

OPNewsletter is on track for a 20th positive month (out of past 21 months since I re-opened OPNewsletter in Jan 2008; a period that includes what is termed as one of the most fearsome bear markets of all time). All the 3 portfolios are making money. Overall, we invested a maximum of 81.9% of capital and our gains are +6% (x-commission) and +4.78% including commissions.

    An interesting two weeks! A fun fact- Had we not done any adjustments since Oct 28, the OPNewsletter would have been up to a Phase-2 record +20.7% by last Friday close and we still had two weeks to go!;

Dow TA Nov 8 2008In the hindsight, it seems it was not necessary as markets have been finding support at 50Days EMA ever since the bull ride began after Mar’09 lows (see attached chart). But every pullback needs to be taken seriously, the down volume was increasing, number of distribution days were increasing, dow theory has been indicating a negative divergence (and still is) and there is no volume sponsorship on the up days, so I can’t take chances especially where there hasn’t been any significant pull back in this >+50% bull ride; at OPN preserving capital is preferred over potential to make more. Hence, we did make the adjustments which thus lowered the returns. Trading with discipline knows no coulda, woulda, shoulda.

From this week on, I shall also start sharing an educational article (not necessarily from OP) that you may visit to continuously build your options knowledge horizon. If you would like to share an article that others may benefit, pls do let me know by writing at OptionPundit@gmail.com;  This week, I am sharing an article explaining Implied Volatility.

We shall either start wrapping-up or roll portfolios this week; and also begin our search for Dec portfolios.

If you are not an OPNewsletter member and would like to sign-up, pls click here to sign-up for the waitlist as OPNewsletter subscription is open via invitation only as this will be appropriate time for Dec portfolios.

  • How to Play $100 Buyout of BNI?

Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway (BRK.A) said Tuesday that it will acquire the remaining shares of railroad operator Burlington Northern Santa Fe (BNI) that it doesn’t already own for $100 per share in cash and stock in a deal valued at approximately $44 billion.

“Our country’s future prosperity depends on its having an efficient and well-maintained rail system,” said Berkshire CEO Warren E. Buffett. “Conversely, America must grow and prosper for railroads to do well. Berkshire’s $34 billion investment in BNSF is a huge bet on that company, CEO Matt Rose and his team, and the railroad industry.”

“Most important of all, however, it’s an all-in wager on the economic future of the United States,” said Buffett. “I love these bets.”

Closing of the transaction is expected to occur during the first quarter of 2010. And that’s where I want to use it for a trade idea.

  • OPN Subscriber Testimonials

It’s been quite a while since I last collected feedback from OPNewsletter subscribers. Since we have passed through one of the most cruel bear markets of our time, I thought it was a good time to understand if OPNewsletter was still adding value or not.  As I receive more feedback, I shall continue to update here.

    Dear OP,

It has been a fantastic learning experience with OPN, and a profitable one to boot! The astute trading philosophy that OPN follows is found nowhere else – and I have looked & tried a lot of different services. OPN is genuine, looks out for the subscribers, and fosters a trader community environment on the website. The portfolio and risk management principles are outstanding, and again, not found any place else that offers such subscription based services.
In terms of learning about options trading at OPN, there is nothing like it. I have learned more about greeks, time decay, adjustments, etc on this site by being part of the group that takes on the trade.

If there is one place where there can be room for improvement, I would say that it is in the area of results reporting. In today’s world, it is much more prevalent to have things published online as opposed to attaching spreadsheets to posts. One option is to use Google Docs, which is basically an excel spreadsheet that is online, which can be published only to the subscriber community as a read-only document. A big advantage with online publishing is that the adjustment entries can be made as soon as the trades are taken.

Finally, I would like to comment on the fee. I would like to see a discounted annual, 6-month, 3-month, and monthly structure, with the facility to upgrade and downgrade without much trouble. Right now, I am on a monthly subscription, but if I can get a 6-month membership at a discounted price, I would jump on it.

I would certainly recommend this service to others because of the genuine, honest, profitable service it has to offer, always keeping portfolio and risk management as its core principles.

Thank You for the great, honest, profitable service OP. Looking forward to a great 2010!

Thank you so much Mohan. I appreciate your feedback and thank you for upgrading your subscription to annual from monthly subscription.

I’ve been a subscriber of OP Newsletter for more than 1 year. I’ve been trading options for almost 3 years. I am very satisfied with this newsletter. It is very profitable. It was doing good even during the huge down time in 2008. OP is very experienced in option trading. His market/stock assessment is accurate in most of the times (of course, nobody can be 100% accurate), and his trading timing is always excellent. OP not only just provides a trading strategy, but also explains his idea and provides a detailed, conditional trading plan. This helps a lot to calm you down when the market doesn’t move the way you wanted. OP also sends out adjustment plans timely. By doing the adjustments, those profolios which don’t profit at the beginning turn out to be profitable at the end. Well, OP Newsletter does require some knowledge and experience in option trading. For new traders, watching or paper trading for 1 or 2 months is very helpful. Overall, I highly recommend OP Newsletter.

Thanks Y. Wang for your being part of the OPN. While together not only we survived a fearsome bear market, we preserved our capital and are now on track again to grow it further.

I have been with OPN for about two months and am quite happy with its service. First I like the idea that OPN separate the trades into speculative trades and income trades. OPN clearly let you know your risk and possible reward for each trade in advance. So you know which trades to take and how much to buy. Most importantly, OPN manages all positions that he suggests and quite often can turn losing trades into winning trades, unlike most other services that once a trade is suggested you are on your own.

Thank you Eric. I hope OPN continues to add more and more value to its members. The forum community is growing and there are lots of insights that are helping in generating ideas to continuously improve upon OPNewsletter.
