  • BAC IV Speculative trade

screenhunter_01-aug-23-2319.gifI mentioned earlier that I am looking for IV rise in BAC. IV for BAC had earlier risen to 30%, then quickly dropped to 20s which is still about 5% higher than mean.

However, due to $2billion funding to CFC, I am expecting a rise in IV, for short-term period. It may not happen and that’s why it’s a speculative trade vs an Income trade.

bac-double-calendar.pngIdeally I was looking for a double diagonal but I couldn’t find one with good risk/reward hence opened a double calendar. It may or may not happen but here is a trade that i am placing for it. If IV doesn’t increase and BAC remains between 48 to 57, this trade will be profitable and maximum profit points are 50 and 55 that are expected to deliver over 50% gains in less than 4 wks time.

Sell 50 and 55 sept puts and buy Nov 50 and 55 puts for a total debit $1.00 per spread.

  • Double Boeing Diagonal

Boeing (BA) recently broke-out (bullish set-up) and I am looking for an income trade that can benefit from new base as well as benefit from the upward movement.

Here is an example of a double diagonal trade:

    ba-dd-risk-profile.png  ba-dd-transaction-jul-07.png

    This trade is:

    • Sell : Jul 95 Puts and 105 Calls
    • Buy : Aug 90 Puts and 110 calls
    • Credit : $0.65
    • Margin Required : $4.35 per spread
    • Return expected by Jul expiration – Roughly $80. ROM – $80/$435= +18%
    • Break Even points – $93.5 and $106.7

Though this is a theta and vega play, this trade can easily absorb upto 7% drop in volatility. This is quite delta netural with a mild bullish bias, and hence will slightly benefit from the upward movement. $95 should provide strong support and hence the range is wider on the higher side vs the lower one.

Disclosure: This is not part of the OP Newsletter for July income trade. But I will track it to closure here.

  • DOW’s potential income trading opportunity

There is an interesting income trade opportunity amidst buyout news of Dow chemical (Dow).

    • Sell: Dow 50 calls, 40 Puts, May
    • Buy: Dow 55 calls, 35 puts, September
    • Credit received:  $0.15 per trade
    • ROM: Difficult to estimate, at current IVs, it is $76 (15.6%) to $117 (24%) (per trade) by May expiration for $485 investment without considering upsides from adjustments.

This is an interesting play as it takes advantage of heightened volatility on 50 calls (only). As per current combined IVs, the breakeven points are $39 and $51.7 (at May expiration). IV has risen and is around 30%, this trade can tolerate another 10% drop in IV should the news of takeover subsides. If however, IV goes higher, this is even better for this trade as this DD is vega play.

The apparent risk with this though is, what if it is bought for $50biliions as rumored (i.e. $52 to $58 per share)? Two sides of the story: The company has announced that it is in no takeover discussions and is not open for sale.(Note, The company has been in takeover rumors since Mid Feb for one or other name). However, there is huge open interest at $50 across all the months. This income trade may absorb shock upto $51.7 but nothing beyond. Other then VMC, I haven’t played stocks for DD, so I will dig deeper but thought to share this interesting opportunity for reader’s benefit. Check out Forbes for details: http://www.forbes.com/2007/04/10/dow-chemical-update2-markets-equity-cx_af_er_0410markets30.html?partner=yahootix Company will announce results on April 26th before market though, and till then I guess IV will either rise or remain where it is now.  So here we are, to take or not to take this opportunity.

  • VMC Double Diagonal: Closed 24.6% Profit

In stead of waiting till friday and get more Juices out of it (or otherwise) I decided to close my VMC double diagonal income trade. Key reason for closing the trade is rise in IV and also the current stock market environment. Should the stock fall further I may lose out the winning position so decided to take it off.

I had update the original trade here. if you follow the link, you may find the whole history of the trade. Do notice that, this trade has absorbed the rise and fall of recent market. I feel good that this trade passed the time test and still yielded nice profit.

  • Double Diagonal on VMC -Update 23% profit, not closed yet

This is to provide an update on the VMC double diagonal that I had shared with registered users (and later with all) (Click here to find the trade). The trade was opened on Feb 26, for $313 (Debit) per double diagonal spread. Today the spread is selling for $383,that means I have already gained about $70/trade. That is $ 70 on $313 investment in less then two weeks, and do notice that it has accommodated the big sell-off in the market as well.

If VMC, next week expires anywhere between $111.6 and $130, the trade is profitable. The maximum profit points are $115 and $125, generating roughly $200 and $250 profit respectively per $313 investment. Isn’t that beautiful income trade? and that’s where I invest bigger percentage of my portfolio. Less risk yet good profit.   Here is the latest chart screenhunter_38.jpg

  • DIA Mar Double Diagonal – Adjustments

How to adjust a double diagonal. This is to update the adjustments I have made to my DIA DD income trade that I posted here.

After huge sell-off, VIX had risen and therefore my overall profit and loss curve was lifted nearly doubling my profit potential. However, at the same time, DIA also passed through my short put strike 123 and reached as low as 120.5. I decided to stay on course when it was passing through 120-123 zone as 120 was a very strong support. On March 5, as the market bounced back I decided to take advantage. DIA was roughly at my breakeven (@ expiration) point when I made the adjustments.

Here are the risk reward chart – Before and After

     orginal-dd-at-march-5-2007.png    after-adjustments-on-march-5.png

Notice how I have widened break even points and also lifted overall P/L curve. If suddenly VIX collapses then P/L will also move to zero line and I might have to adjust.

    Till then profitable trading, OptionPundit
