The Sixth Sense

This video, if you haven’t seen before, will change the way you thought about the technology. Hats-off to Pranav Mistry (Research Assistant and PhD candidate at the MIT Media Lab) who developed this $350 prototype, the sixth sense, that delivers an astonishing interaction between physical surfaces and digital technology. A blockbuster Hollywood sci-fi movie-turns-reality will soon be within reach of average Joe to do many wonderful things.  And to add to greatness, Pranav is going to give the code to the Open Source developers so as to make it available to masses.

There are thousands of applications where it can be used (including stocks and options trading). But other then those money making ideas what excited me was the idea of filling the gap of “5th sense”. Though he didn’t elaborate much on it, this device can work as the 5th sense for those are not as blessed by the mother nature as the average person e.g. those who can’t speak or even hear? This potentially can add more life to their everyday life.

In the simplest terms, Sixth Sense is a mini-projector coupled with a camera and a cellphone—which acts as the computer and your connection to the Cloud, all the information stored on the web. Sixth Sense can also obey hand gestures, like in the infamous Minority Report.

The camera recognizes objects around you instantly, with the micro-projector overlaying the information on any surface, including the object itself or your hand. Then, you can access or manipulate the information using your fingers. Need to make a call? Extend your hand on front of the projector and numbers will appear for you to click. Need to know the time? Draw a circle on your wrist and a watch will appear. Want to take a photo? Just make a square with your fingers, highlighting what you want to frame, and the system will make the photo—which you can later organize with the others using your own hands over the air.

Thank you Pranav for producing such a wonderful idea, this idea is surely worth spreading !

Life is Great,
